Is that one just a standard unmodified one other than the vending machines being coca cola & pal save compatability?
I can run the standard GDI of Shenmue it's just the Espirrall widescreen modded one that appears to have issues.

Yeah it's this one.
It's surprising the game is crashing... It's an action scene ? Maybe you can skip it using an other version for avoid that but it's really strange. You have a sd card reader or play it with hdd mod ? For me sd card is a little better even it's the speed of loadings is low.

Im using ide with a compact flash adapter.
I'll try a save file after the intro as the crash happens just before Ryo goes onto the garden area before the dojo.

you may try using high memory up to 8cff6000, you will pass through the lockup scene, but it will still crash in later scene, because the resources are struggling when running wide screen rendering...
Better option is to use a down-sampled copy such as DCRes and apply the patch, play directly using CD instead of DS

DS RC4 new isoloader has memory addresses patch option (for example use in widescreen hack)
question:
how to write lua script to set the memory addresses patches, so to run from desktop icon? (maybe need update in some modules?)
(create shortcut in isoloader didn't work!)
