Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Zip - 02.08.2011 10:10 Hello, I posted a couple of months ago that I was interested in a permanent Dreamcast that would load dreamshell and play sdiso games even without a gdrom drive. it is my goal to have a permanent dreamcast. Then, the other day I saw this on taobao.com. http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=7655637293& Is this what I'm looking for? I want to make sure before I buy it. The translation to english is confusing. Last time I posted about this, Swat said that Dreamshell would not play games after it was installed. Has this changed? I don't want to waste my money. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Anthony817 - 02.08.2011 18:10 Funny you posted this, I literally just saw this earlier this morning whilst searching through their Dreamcast products. That is exactly what you want. It has no moving parts, save for the internal fan, but this could always be changed by putting an easy to find PC fan and mounting it on the outside of the system. What I want to know is, what in the world is this? Some other front-end for selecting various programs like Dreamshell and other emulators? I am hoping Swat or somebody else can explain to me what this picture above is showing. Also look at this, we started having DS-ICON games you install into the Dreamshell /sd/apps/ folder to have games on the desctop just like you can from a PC. It is awesome to see others use them. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Anthony817 - 02.08.2011 20:00 Ah thanks Vasilliy! @Zip, I didn't reply about your other question. You can not play many retail games with this mod. There are various compatibility list's on the net, but remember, Dreamshell is still in beta, so compatibility could be increased, but probably not by much. If you want to see what retail games are supported in sdiso format that others have tried so far, I can recommend a few places. Vasilliy's list. Russian. http://gueux-forum.net/index.php?showtopic=254502&pid=1909099&st=0entry1909099 zouzzz's list. French. http://gueux-forum.net/index.php?showtopic=254502&pid=1909099&st=0entry1909099 Tuxthewise list. English http://www.dc-swat.ru/forum/thread-1329.html You can judge how much it means to you by viewing those lists. Personally, it is worth it if you are a Dreamcast fanatic that likes using the system in ways it was never meant to be used. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Zip - 03.08.2011 05:43 I wonder if that is what they mean by "SDL" or if they are talking about dreamshell. Also, what's on the other bios? At first I assumed they meant that you can switch between Pal and NTSC regions, but then I saw the screens you are talking about. Did they find a way to make it play games without a GDRom? I also wonder if they got a cdrom to work and replaced the gdrom. I am still a little skeptical that this is what I'm looking for. But the menu screens definitely pose some questions. If you are the same Anthony that wrote the SD Adapter tutorial at dcisozone.com then I would like to thank you. I just ordered 2 SD adapters through buyfromtaobao.com and it was $5 cheaper than the buy now price for 1 adapter on ebay. I would like an sd only system and I have no problem with compatibility, I think it is amazing that 240 games work on SDISO. once all my orders arrive, I'll have my homebrew system set up with VGA, Keyboard, Mouse, and SDISO games. I am very excited because until now I have only heard other people talk about using the sd adapter. I have no problem paying $84 for one of these as well, as long as it is what I am looking for. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Anthony817 - 04.08.2011 00:30 Yeah that was me that wrote the tutorial. I am the moderator of the Dreamcast side, well now I am a global moderator of the new isozone site but ya. I worked very hard getting our sdiso section op and got many of my frineds to buy the adapters from Taobao and they have been contributing to the list of games we have. It is amazing what the community can do when we all pull together. SDL = Sandisk Loader, aka the SD Adapters we have, just another name for them really. If you are wanting a Dreamcast with no moving drive than I assure you that is what you are looking for. If I had the money myself I would go that rout, but you can still do the same thing without modding your system, just burn the "Dreamshell from SD Loader disc" and it will ONLY spin the disc enough for it ot tell the Dreamcast to boot the Dreamshell Operating System directly from the SD card. Trust me, this will make the system last for many years to come, and hopefully for many more decades! RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - DoctorNicholas - 04.08.2011 04:37 id rather wait for a hard drive expansion that fits underneath the dreamcast RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Zip - 04.08.2011 10:45 I would love a hard drive on my dreamcast, but that's basically what the SD cards are anyway. I can fit a lot of stuff on an 8-32gb sd card. Hell, I remember when a 32 gb hard drive was enormous. With the SD adapter and the VGA adapter I am able to disconnect them and reconnect to a new console if this one breaks. The only mods I am planning are a reset button mod and I would like to replace the f1 resistor with a replaceable fuse assembly, so it will be a quick fix. I will periodically buy replacement consoles for $20 until I have a stockpile and I will limit my game play to SD only, no disk games. I think it is a sound plan. The SD adapter is new to me (it hasn't arrived yet) but I will definitely help add sdisos to your list. Is there a good tutorial on how to create them? RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - neon - 04.08.2011 23:38 As far as I know, Dreamcast with standard BIOS doesn't boot when gd-rom board is taken out. Am I correct? I also don't know does it will boot with bios mod. I won't believe until I see a movie. Does it have fan? If not, I will be nervous all the time that GPU will fry out. As I remember SDISO module doesn't work with bios mod. Am I correct? Guy from taobao doesn't say anything about commercial games. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - SWAT - 05.08.2011 11:00 Dreamcast works without gdrom. Commercial games has not yet run without the original bios. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - DoctorNicholas - 05.08.2011 20:19 maybe get the bios from the dc then put it on the sd card and have tiw hen games load they load through that? RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - Zip - 05.08.2011 20:44 Just as long as I can play sdiso I am happy. I will get one of these. Yes, with a bios mod chip and Dreamshell, you can install Dreamshell into the new bios and boot it with no Gdrom drive. Why would you need a video to believe that? Swat here says it works, that should be good enough for anybody, I mean he designed the code himself. You can create sdiso's by following this tutorial here. http://www.dcisozone.com/tutorial/1430/how-to-create-sdiso-images-for-sd-adapters-and-dreamshell.html Zouzzz said he will be making his other new program in the English and German languages also, so when it is updated I would go with that program, but until then get the one from my tutorial above. RE: Permanent Dreamcast part 2 - zouzzz - 07.08.2011 18:33 SDISO Maker'll released tomorrow, english and germand language'll are added. Do you think you can fix that? |
