gdrom board out of order :( - somacast - 16.12.2016 21:49
hello,
during my early attempts to do the mod I had sone wiring errors so I had to solder & desolder maaaaaany times, so I ended up with a gdrom not working when i fix it, i tried cleaning etc didnt help, it behaves as if no gdrom is attached (black screen then still dreamcast logo).
story goes on, as i by mistake removed (R233), i just tried to fix it without magnifier lens so i fixed it wrong in short circuit, so when i tried the board smoke smell came quickly and i did not try it again,
is this repairable? i dont have the R233 it was broken,, so where to start, because like this my stock dreamcast is not working

100Kohm resistor. you can use smd or non smd too

update : soldered a non smd 100 kohms to the board, dreamcast behaves as if no gdrom installed, when i depress the cover button laser unit does not respond, motor not moving and no laser... what to check plz?

I searched for fuse components but could not find, could it be a cap is gone ??

usually caps gone by long time working,hot,short-circuit and i think your caps are alive

thnx again , but as I said there was a smoke smell when I restored the shorted resistor ... so could it be one of the caps gone like that ? visually I don't see anything unsuall but it still not working..

It's hard to tell something about it, can be a lot of things. But from your description it seems that you shorted the +3volts line with another one. R233 is responsible for RESET line.
Was the GD-ROM board damaged only? Is the mainboard still working?
In such situations, it's pretty rare a capacitor failure, it's most like a fuse, resistor or a semiconductor (transistor, IC). Yes, some hi-res pics from both sides of GD-ROM PCB should be welcome.

Yes the main board is still working, I even moved the mod to it after I lost the GD-ROM board.

Please, if you have a magnifier, check IC4 (TC9450) where I marked in red, is it a cracked?
