The speed is more than enough, there is not enough full-fledged asynchronous data transfer. The CPU is still blocked as in the case of Serial SD, just for x2+ shorter period of time. An intermediate device (a more advanced adapter) is needed to help fix this problem. But so far, nothing like this has been developed. Apparently the CPU has some free time in DreamNeo and Neo4all, unlike DOA2 and SoulCalibur. Most of the CPU time in 3D games on Dreamcast is taken up by lighting and sending animated geometry to the GPU every frame. The NEO has 2D graphics without complex geometry and lighting. |
