there was a smoke smell when I restored the shorted resistor ... so could it be one of the caps gone like that ? visually I don't see anything unsuall but it still not working..

It's hard to tell something about it, can be a lot of things. But from your description it seems that you shorted the +3volts line with another one. R233 is responsible for RESET line.
Was the GD-ROM board damaged only? Is the mainboard still working?
In such situations, it's pretty rare a capacitor failure, it's most like a fuse, resistor or a semiconductor (transistor, IC). Yes, some hi-res pics from both sides of GD-ROM PCB should be welcome.
